Today in History – September 12: “India”
1398: Timur arrived at the banks of Sindhu river with 92 horse squadron with each squadron having 1,000 horsemen. What followed was absolute destruction and Delhi was looted and plundered. Timur’s invasion was brutal and brought down absolute mayhem. Source
1627: Ibrahim Adil Shah II – Sultanate of Bijapur’s King died. Source
1686: Forces of Aurangzeb overpowered and destroyed Bijapur and ended the Adil Shahi Dynasty. Source
1786: Lord Cornwallis as appointed as India’s Governor General. He also became the Commander-in-Chief of the Army.
1897: Battle of Saragarhi – 21 Sikh Soldiers of British Indian Army fought against 10,000 Afghans. The 21 Sikh soldiers were wiped out completely but before they died, they managed to kill 180 Pashtun Afghans and left many more wounded. It was one of the greatest last stands in military history.
1965: Deep inside Pakistani territory, Indian Army fights back a heavy tank attack from Pakistani army during the 1965 war.

490 BCE: At the Battle of Marathon, Persia’s invading Greek force defeated by Athenians with help of their Plataean allies.
1185: Byzantine Emperor – Andronikos I Komnenos was brutally killed in Constantinopole.
1213: At the Battle of Muret during Albigensian Crusade, Aragon’s Peter II was defeated by Leicester’s 5th Earl – Simon de Montfort.
1309: In Spanish Reconquista’s context, the First Siege of Gibraltar takes place resulting in Castilian victory after Emirate of Granada fights against Kingdom of Castile.
1683: In Battle of Vienna during Austro-Ottoman War, many European armies join hands to fight and defeat Ottoman Empire.
1814: At Battle of North Point in War of 1812, British land advance halted by American detachment at Baltimore.
1847: Beginning of Battle of Chapultepec during Mexican-American War.
1915: 4,000 survivors of Armenian Genocide stranded on Musa Dagh rescued by French Soldiers.
1919: Adolf Hitler joined the GWP or German Workers’ Party. The party was later renamed as Nazi Party.
1923: United Kingdom annexes Southern Rhodesia. It’s current name is Zimbabwe.
1938: For Germans of Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland region, self-determination and autonomy demanded by Adolf Hitler.
1942: RMS Laconia was torpedoed during WWII. It was carrying Italian POWs, Allied Soldiers and civilians. Heavy loss of life took place.
1959: A large rocket called Lunik II was launched for Moon by Soviet Union.
1974: Eithopia’s Emperor – Haile Selassie was deposed by a military coup, thereby ending is 58-year long reign.
2003: 8 officers of Iraqi police shot by US troops in Fallujah during Iraq War.
