Today in History – November 20: “India”
1666: On November 20, Shivaji returned to Raigarh following a pilgrimage to Gaya and Varanasi. He ensured that he avoided detection. The reason was that Shivaji and his son Sambhaji were arrested by Aurangzeb and put in house arrest when they met with Aurangzeb on May 12 that year for Treaty of Purandhar. Later on August 19, both of them managed to escape in a couple of sweet baskets. Sambhaji was sent to Mathura under the care of three Deccani Brahmins – Krishnaji, Visaji and Kashi. Shivaji on the other hand went for pilgrimage.
1750: Tipu was born at Devanhalli village located near Bangalore. He was the son of Hyder Ali.
1917: Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose founded the famous Bose Research Institute in Calcutta (now Kolkata). Bose gave this world a number of valuable inventions including microwave, wireless telegraphy etc. He was the first person in world to prove that plants have life too.
1921: Incident similar to Black Hole of Calcutta took place in Kerala on this day. A closed goods wagon was opened where 60 Moplahs were found dead by asphyxiation. The Black Hole of Calcutta incident was a far more exaggerated event – merely a figment of imagination of John Zephanian Holwell – a person of British East India Company. Many historians later found that Holwell was responsible for fabricating incidents and exaggerating them with the prowess of his imagination.

1739: The Battle of Porto Bello started on this day during the War of Jenkins’ Era. It was fought between Spanish forces and British forces.
1776: During the American Revolutionary War, British forces landed at Palisades. After landing the British forces attacked Fort Lee. The attack led to the retreat of the Continental Army across New Jersey.
1789: New Jersey became the first state in United States to ratify Bill of Rights.
1910: Plan de San Luis Potosí was issued by Francisco I. Madero denouncing Porfirio Díaz – Mexican President. Madero called for a revolution for overthrowing the government of Mexico. This effectively started the Mexican Revolution.
1917: During World War I, the Battle of Cambrai started between the British forces and the German forces. The British forces made some initial advances with success only to be pushed back later during the battle.
1940: During WWII, Hungary signs the Tripartite Pact and just joined the Axis Powers officially.
1945: During the Nuremberg Trials the trial of 45 Nazis started at Nuremberg’s Palace of Justice.
1962: The Cuban Missile Crisis comes to an end when Soviet Union agreed on removing missiles from Cuba. The quarantine of the Caribbean nation that was imposed by US President J. F. Kennedy came to an end.
1985: Windows 1.0 was released by Microsoft.
